The county is recorded as 'Lindsey' in the Domesday Book and originated by merging the Kingdom of Lindsey with the borough of Stamford. Until 1974 the districts of Kesteven, Holland and Lindsey all had their separate county councils, after which they were all unified within Lincolnshire. Largely an agricultural region, Lincolnshire is defined by its nutrient rich soil and abundant cauliflower and cabbage crops, as well as oil seed rape, wheat, sugar beet and barley.

The county has a low population density a result of which is a limited transport infrastructure within Lincolnshire. However, it benefits from the East Coast Main Line train service which passes directly through Grantham, to both London and the North.

The Humberside airport is located within the county, but both the Robin Hood airport and East Midlands airport are within close proximity making Lincolnshire highly accessible from all parts of the UK and beyond. When choosing a Lincolnshire holiday cottage it is worth deciding from the outset whether you prefer a peaceful rural location or a livelier town centre situation where there are shops, bars and restaurants on your doorstep.

The cottages range from small and intimate, perfect for a romantic getaway, to large and spacious perfect for one or more families to enjoy time away together. Many of the cottages accept pets, but this should be confirmed in advance of booking. If your ideal retreat is a Lincolnshire holiday cottage on the coast then the 50 miles of unspoilt and stunning coastline Skegness to Mablethorpe will not disappoint. Chapel St Leonards, Cleethorpes and Skegness, amongst others, are picture postcard seaside towns which are second to none for family fun.

The city of Lincoln which is dominated by the breathtaking cathedral is brimming with history, culture and 21st century attractions. The Cultural Quarter includes the Theatre Royal, the Collection and the Lincoln Drill Hall, and the Cathedral Quarter is home to the cathedral, castle and quaint antique and speciality gift shops.
